listening

Here are moments of reflection at the edge of a noisy, complicated city. A blog with melody: the music I hear as I walk through the city streets, the park, along the Hudson. The life of a singer is a rich mosaic of learning and I hope to share some of that with you here.

In August of 2020 - about a half year into the pandemic - the confusion and sadness and quiet streets were very much with us and I started drafting a blog. Two years have passed. A strange sort of unmoored couple of years, to be sure. Anyway, it’s August 2022 now, and I’m launching the blog. Please note that the entries will be a mix of past and present.

I am a soprano and voice teacher living in New York City. Many of my posts include musical recordings, some of which are my own, along with comments and photographs, all of which are my own. The photos are of New York City, mostly the Upper West Side. The song translations are mine unless otherwise attributed.

If a recording sounds scratchy, that is extra special: it was recorded in the early 20th century, long before stereophonic sound. Just listen past the scratches. Take your time. Hear the performance. I don’t think you will be disappointed.
